The population explosion in urban centres of developing countries is one of the most serious problems that policy makers as well as research workers have paid great attention. The urban migration during the last decades is one of the components of urban population growth. The interdistrict migration in Pakistan, for example, contributed 8.0 to 25.0 percent of the ten largest cities' population. It is, however, not clear whether the migration is a contemporary phenomenon in these countries and whether it is different from that of today in characteristics, provided that migration was seen even before the independence. The purpose of this article is to examine the extent of migration in the Punjab under the British rule and the mechanism which had worked behind the outflow of population from rural areas.
