The Japanese species of the genus Athalia Leach, 1817 are revised. Seven species and one subspecies, i. e., A. japonica (Klug, 1815), A. infumata (Marlatt, 1898), A. proxima (Klug, 1834), A. rosae rufcornis Jakovlev, 1888, A. kashmirensis Benson, 1932, A. yanoi Takeuchi, 1952, stat. nov. and A. scutellariae Cameron, 1880, are recognized not only from the morphological characters of the adults and larvae including chromosome number but also from the biological knowledge such as host plants, life cycle, natural enemies, distribution, and electrophoretic analysis of the larval hemolymph protein. A. scutellariae is recorded from Japan for the first time. Redescriptions of the adults of all the species in Japan are given. Descriptions of the larvae of all the species except those of A. scutellariae are also given. Larvae of A. kashmirensis and A. yanoi are newly described. Keys to species and subspecies are given both for the adults and larvae.
