The characteristics of a mass spectrometer as an experimental means to study plasma ionic constituents are surveyed and evaluated. The considerations lead to the choice of a quadrupole mass filter as the most suitable type. The specification of the mass filter as well as its performance is described. The mass separation is performed by a high frequency field without the use of a deflecting magnet. The mass filter is operated at a frequency of 2 MHz with a variable voltage for scanning between 1 and 100 amu with a resolution of aqqroximately 100. The quadrupole poles are 30 cm in length. The technique described here makes possible a more definitive information about the microscopic properties of plasma.
