Magnetite was prepared from the aqueous suspension of β-FeOOH containing Fe^<2+> ions by applying the hydrolysis reaction of hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) at 94℃. To study the mechanism of magnetite formation, the changes of pH and Fe^<2+> ion concentration of the solution during the formation of magnetite were measured. As a result, the reaction was confirmed to proceed in three stages : (1) Hydrolysis of Fe^<2+> ions, (2) Hydrolysis of HMTA, and (3) Formation of magnetite. Magnetite was found to form at a pH above 4.4,and the amount increased with the increase of steady value of pH attained after long time.
