Objective : To show the epidemiology and feto-maternal outcome in HELLP syndrome. Study Design : Patients with HELLP syndrome (n : 104) treated during seven years (1991-1997) in Dicle University Research Hospital were reviewed in a retrospective study according to the representing symptoms, demographic and laboratory findings, characteristics of delivery and feto-maternal prognosis. Results : Low socio-economic status, irregular prenatal control, inadequate first therapeutic intervention and transport conditions, late admission was the main characteristics of the group. The initial diagnosis was eclampsia in 46% and preeclampsia in 45% of the HELLP cases. This syndrome was seen at the prepartum period in 61% and at the postpartum period in 39% of the cases. Mean gestational age was 34.38±4.20 weeks. Perinatal outcomes were unsatisfactory with high incidence of perinatal mortality (600‰). Maternal mortality was seen in 9.6% of the cases. Conclusions : HELLP syndrome is a life threatening condition in hypertensive pregnancies especially in uneducated population with bad pregnancy control, unsatisfactory and late medical approach.
