Orinithological research in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions is carried out at sea and on land. This research is constrained by a number of factors. These constraints are examined in relation to the objectives of the BIOMASS programme. More particularly, the aims and scope of BIOMASS-related avian research are reviewed, and an assessment is made of accomplishments during 1977-1981. Prospects for BIOMASS-related ornithological research in 1982-1986 (the second half of the BIOMASS period) are examined.
