Sex differences in tooth wear were examined in the following five Japanese populations : prehistoric hunter-gatherers (Jomon period), prehistoric agriculturalists (Yayoi period), and medieval (Kamakura period), pre-modern (Edo period), and recent (Meiji-Taisho periods) populations. The results suggested that, in the Jomon, Edo, and possibly Yayoi populations, the posterior teeth were worn more in the males than in the female, while there were no noticeable sex differences in wear severity on the anterior teeth. Clear sex differences were not detected in the severity and pattern of wear in the samples from the Kamakura and Recent peoples.
