• Cocconeis ceticola f. constricta, which NEMOTO (1956) described from the skin of North Pacific sperm whales, was raised to the species level and placed in the new genus Bennettella by HOLMES (1985). This entity is discussed frequently by NEMOTO (1958) and NEMOTO et al. (1977,1980). These authors often included Cocconeis ceticola f. berardii, an invalidly described taxon of KLIASHTORIN (1962), in their concept of f. constricta. An examination of several South African cetacean diatom samples in our possession have led us to the conclusion that two distinct entities were included under f. constricta by NEMOTO and NEMOTO and his colleagues. Unable to locate the holotype or type material of f. constricta (NEMOTO 1983) we have designated a neotype for Bennettella constricta and discussed the morphology of this entity and describe Bennetella berardii sp. nov. as a taxon distinct from B. constricta.
