Two new taxa were obtained from whales stranded or caught along the coast of South Africa. The Nemoto et al. (1980) entity Stauroneis olympica HUSTEDT from a killer whale (Orcinus orca LINNAEUS) is a new species of Epiphalaina HOLMES, NAGASAWA & TAKANO and the entity Gomphonema aestuarii CLEVE from a strap-toothed whale (Mesoplodon layardii GRAY) is likewise a new species assignable to Tripterion HOLMES, NAGASAWA & TAKANO. Our discussion was focused on the geographic distribution of cetacean diatoms which probably are not host specific.
