Chromosomes and morphological features of 616 individuals belonging to the Poa sphondylodes-viridula aggregate collected from 65 localities in southwestern and central Japan were examined. Counts of 2n=28,35,42,49 and 56 were made. Two types of populations in the combination of cytotypes could be recognized; populations consisting of only tetraploids and populations composed of higher polyploids. These two types of populations were distributed allopatrically. Variations of five morphological characters (ligule length, scabrousness of peduncles and internodes, length ratio of sheath to internode and frequency of black nodes) were analyzed. When the five morphological characters were taken into accunt in combination, tetraploids and higher polyploids were correctly discriminated with negligible exceptions. Tetraploids and higher polyploids corresponded to Poa sphondylodes and P. viridula respectively. Ligule length was adopted as the key to the species by previous workers, but it was not true that P. sphondylodes can always be discriminated from P. viridula by ligule length.
