It is known that three morphologically and geographically differentiated types can be recognized within the Hypericum pseudopetiolatum complex in Japan. However, plants of the form intermediate between the Japan Sea and Sohayaki types are sporadically detected in northern and central Kyushu, where both types are distributed. To elucidate the nature of this intermediate form, a total of 16 population samples were collected in Kyushu. Based on examinations of intra-populational variation in four floral characters and in pollen stainability, it seemed safe to conclude that the intermediate form has been derived through natural hybridizations between the Japan Sea and Sohayaki types, which are somewhat reproductively isolated and do not cross by virtue of their allopatric distribution. It was suggested that, in the course of these hybridizations, recovery of pollen fertility was caused by repeated backcrossings and inbreeding, and that stabilization and establishment of an intermediate race derivedthrough hybridizations is proceeding. These observations indicate that the concerned hybridizations might be regarded as examples of extensive introgression.
