Dictyostelium mucoroides BREFELD and D. sphaerocephalum (OUD.) SACC. et MARCH. were reviewed on the basis of isolates collected in Europe where both species were initially found. D. sphaerocephalum was identical with BREFELD's D. mucoroides, and the concept of D. mucoroides of the present day was different from that of BREFELD's species or any other known species. Therefore, D. sphaerocephalum was arranged in the synonymy of D. mucoroides and, for the species commonly called "D. mucoroides" in the present day, a new binomial Dictyostelium brefeldianum was proposed.
