Serum levels of lipoproteins and other lipids were determined in the patients with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). The concentrations of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-ch) and high density lipoprotein phospholipid (HDL-pl) and the ratio of HDL-ch/total cholesterol minus HDL-ch in the patients with AION were lower than those in the healthy controls. When these patients with AION were divided into two groups by the fact whether they were complicated by cerebral infarction or not, statistically significant differences were noted between the levels of HDL-ch and HDL-pl of the patients with AION complicated by cerebral infarction and those of the healthy controls. It is suggested to conclude that lowered HDL-ch and HDL-pl levels as a risk factor for atherosclerosis are one of the important causes of AION.
