In the course of preparation of pure collagen sample from bovine aorta by differential salt precipitation, collagen gel was found to be formed when the cold collagen solution was heated to room temperature in the presence of salt such as sodium chloride. Some characteristics of this sol-gel transformation were investigated. Even if the concentration of collagen was lowered as low as 0.01%, the gel was formed. Setting and melting points were determined separately. 0.09% collagen in 1.7 M NaCl set around l5℃. At the setting point the specific rotation changed abruptly although the conformation of collagen molecule might be unchanged.
