Binaural summation at the threshold of audibility for the equated ears was investigated by using short-duration tones. The magnitude of summation in normal cases was about 3 dB at every frequency and for every tonal duration except a few extremes. The literatures on the short duration/threshold function (SD/T function) were reviewed. The binaural summation and SD/T function test, and binaural fusion test with band-pass filters were conducted in three pathologic cases. On the basis of the results obtained from these pathologic cases, we conclude that the binaural summation test at threshold for short-duration tones will inform us on the function of the peripheral sensori-neural auditory tracts including the region of crossing of the tracts. Furthermore, the combination with the binaural fusion test by using band-pass filters will give us more information on the whole auditory tracts.
