Cilia, pellicles, oral apparatuses, and mitochondria were isolated from the ciliate, Tetrahymena pyriformis, and proteins solubilized from these organelles were separated by analytical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate. Protein and carbohydrate staining of the gels revealed the presense of glycoproteins in the membranes of cilia, pellicles, and mitochondria, but not in the oral apparatuses. These results are discussed with respect to the previous hypothesis (H. Sinohara, Viva Origino 5,11,1976) that glycoproteins and endocytoskeletons were major cellular constituents that had been required for the evolution of protoeukaryotes.
