The number of osteon, number of lamellae, size of osteon, and diameter of Haversian canal were measured in 42 ground cross sections of the mid shaft of humerus of Japanese males ranging in age from 41 to 102 years. From these measured values regression equations for estimating age were derived, and the error between the estimates and the actual ages was examined. Significant correlations were found to exist between the actual age and the four items measured. According to the regression equation for estimating age with these four items, more than 95% of the estimates were statistically within ± 11.7 years of the actual ages. This regression equation is available for the estimation of ages from 40 to 100 years, and good results can be obtained in the aged compared with other methods.
