In order to learn why dry skin conditions do not occur on the facial skin of the aged, even in winter, the skins of both young and aged people for the following factors were examined : the amount of stratum corneum surface water, including sweat, the number of layers of both the stratum corneum and the stratum granulosum, and the amounts of filaggrin and involucrin. The results showed that (1) the amount of stratum corneum surface water was the same in both groups, even at 15℃, (2) psychological perspiration occurred in aged facial skin at 15℃, (3) the number of layers of both the stratum corneum and the stratum granulosum of facial skin was the same in both groups, (4) there was no difference in the filaggrin content of facial skin between the aged and the young, but there was a striking difference in the filaggrin content between facial skin and lower leg skin of the aged, and (5) there was no difference in the involucrin content of facial skin between the young and the aged, and there was also no difference in the involucrin content between facial skin and lower leg skin of the aged.
