One hundred and six chronic schizophrenic patients were evaluated by means of the comprehensive psychopathological rating scale (CPRS), and the evaluated symptoms were analyzed and classified into meaningful groups by cluster (CL) analysis using the nearest neighbor method of distance measurement. As a result, the dendrogram both of the objective and the subjective symptoms was based on the similarity of symptom intensity. In the light of the clinical features and the hierarchical structure of symptoms, 5 meaningful clusters were elicited from the subjective and the objective symptoms respectively. The subjective symptoms were classified into 5 meaningful clusters, i.e., delusional, neurasthenic, schizophrenic and two depressive symptom clusters. The objective symptoms were classified into 5 meaningful clusters, i.e., manic, positive schizophrenic, extrapyramidal, negative schizophrenic and neurasthenic symptom clusters. When those were compared with the traditional subclassifications of schizophrenia, irrespective of phase whether in the acute or in the chronic, regarding the results of the cluster analysis it was proved that the results of CL analysis were in keeping with the traditional subclassification of schizophrenia.
