Evaluation was made on whether or not the prognosis of patients with carcinoma of the uterine cervix could be estimated by using cytological and biopsied histological specimens. As a result, there was no clinical correlation between the WHO tissue classification and the prognosis before radiation therapy. In the case that there were more adenomatous characteristics in preradiation specimens, the prognosis tended to be worse, although it seemed to be impractical to apply this criterion to individual cases. Next, the cytologic classifications and the Oboshi-Shimo-sato's classification on histological examination could serve as an index to show the state of the carcinoma lesion during radiation therapy, but were of no use in the estimation of prognosis in the early phases of radiation therapy at a given dose level. And that, in the cytologic specimens obtained during 20 Gy radiation, the rate of intracytoplasmic vacuolation, occurrence of meganuclei 25 μm or more in diameter and the occurrence of polynuclei of more than 10% were determined. At the same time, anti-EMA staining was performed by using the histological specimens obtained during 20 Gy radiation to calculate the incidence of less than 30% proportions of the positive cells in the carcinoma lesion. Of these 4 criteria, if 3 or more criteria are determined, it is predicted that radiosensitivity is good with favorable prognosis.
