Massive quantities of gravel were excavated as building materials from the riverbed of the Sagami River and its tributary, in Kanagawa Prefecture, before the prohibition of gravel mining in 1964. As a natural result of this activity, the level of the riverbed was lowered dramatically, and it is said that the amount of degradation in the mining area reached more than five meters on average. Many river structures were destroyed or became unusable. The riverbed degradation had brought serious social and economic consequences for the inhabitants in the river basin. We can find much topographical and geological evidence on the degradation of the riverbed even now, thirty years after the prohibition of mining, by careful observation along the river. Local scour is remarkable just below some of the weirs and consolidation works across the river: it is still progressing and damaging these structures.
