SF6 gas is widely used as a insulation medium in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) because SF6 has high insulation and interruption performance. Recently, the development of GIS using a substitute gas for SF6 gas has been strongly demanded from a viewpoint of environmentally friendly concepts. We are paying attention to CO2 gas as a substitute for SF6. In this paper, we discuss the breakdown (BD) characteristics of high-pressure CO2 up to 0.9MPa, especially the effects of electrode surface roughness under a quasi-uniform electric field. To compare the characteristics, experiments with SF6, Dry Air and N2 that were candidate substitute for SF6 gas were carried out. As experimental and analytical results, we clarified the effect of electrode surface roughness of CO2 gas quantitatively.
