概要

ケラタン硫酸は2糖の繰り返し構造を単位とするグリコサミノグリカンの一つであり、コアプロテインに共有結合することによりケラタン硫酸プロテオグリカンを生ずる。ケラタン硫酸プロテオグリカンは元来角膜抽出物において発見され、また関節軟骨中において豊富に見出されたため、これら組織における構造や生物学的機能が注目されてきた。しかし1980年代に入り中枢神経系においても見出され、神経系の発達や疾患における働きが注目を集めてきた。現在、ケラタン硫酸プロテオグリカンは生理的および損傷後神経可塑性を制御する主要な分子の一つとして受け入れられ始めている。
