Arsenic in groundwater is a health hazard for rural areas all over the world, especially in developing countries. Laterite with high iron content is very promising for arsenic treatment. Adsorption of arsenic using laterite calcined at different calcination temperatures was done in batch to find an appropriate condition for preparation of adsorbent. Results showed that laterite calcined at 400oC can remove 99.42% of arsenic in simulated groundwater, and treated water satisfied the WHO standard for drinking water. Characteristics of calcined laterite using XRF, EDX, XRD, BET and SEM analyses supported for interpretation of the arsenic adsorption. Adsorption equilibrium was found by varying initial arsenic concentration from 0.361 to 5.073mg/L in batch. Langmuir Isotherm model and Freundlich Isotherm model showed good fit with the experimental data. Column operating parameters such as space velocity, inlet arsenic concentration and adsorbent bed height were investigated their effects on column performance. The Bed Depth Service Time model was useful to predict column parameter constants. Calcined laterite as a low cost adsorbent is effective and suitable for arsenic treatment from groundwater.
