A novel method for tailoring the beam profile of laser diodes that employs Lloyds mirror interference is investigated. The beam profile in the vertical direction is controlled by inserting a GaAs mirror below the active layer. The experimentally obtained trends are successfully modeled by numerical calculations using Huygens integral.
