Human and animal bodies contain practically all naturally occurring mineral elements and only 14 of them have been shown to be essential to health. Imbalance in mineral elements (on the cellular level) is one of the basic causes of diseases. Within the past decade, there has been a growing interest in the role of mineral elements in human health and disease. Isotopic tracer method is especially suited to such studies and has played an important role. In this paper, some recent progress in the study of metabolism and functional roles of mineral elements made by the isotopic tracer method in key laboratory of nuclear analytical techniques, institute of high energy physics is outlined, including rare earth elements, selenium, calcium, chromium and iron.
