The antiproliferative effects of a n-butanol extract from Chlorophytum comosum (C. comosum) (spider plant) roots was tested in vitro against four human cell lines: HeLa, CCRF-HSB-2, HL-60 and U937 cells. The extract was found to have cell antiproliferative effects against HeLa, CCRF-HSB-2, HL-60 and U937 cell lines, with an IC_<50> value of 6.6, 5.4, 8.7 and 10.2μg/ml, respectively. The dying cells showed characteristics of apoptosis, such as DNA fragmentation, as assessed by DNA electrophoresis analysis and the Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated biotin dUTP Nick End-Labeling (TUNEL) method. These results indicate that extract from C. comosum roots can induce apoptosis in human cell lines.
