We propose 2-tiers hierarchical authentication mechanism for sensor network. Because of low battery and small memory size of a sensor node, the authentication scheme should be lightweight. Furthermore, a base station determines any situation depending on collected information, so the information from its sensor nodes should be absolutely correct. In addition despite of any sensor failure due to battery or any other reasons, the mechanism should be performed with no doubt. Thus, we propose a lightweight authentication mechanism in which a sensor has low computation and small request memory when message exchange. Also, our scheme is able to endure burst packet loss, sensor failure and forgery sensor relying on message redundancy, distributed authentication and proper selection of designated sensors. Also, we analyze several security properties against some attacks and show that our algorithm is fault-tolerant and consumes low computation power and small memory size. Finally, we compare our proposal with μ-TELSA.
