Future space based radar systems will offer the possibility of combining polarization diversity with single and repeat pass interferometry [1]. Such modes offer the possibility of exploiting new coherent image processing techniques such as polarimetric SAR (POLSAR)[2] and polarimetric interferometry (POLInSAR)[3,4]. In this paper we review the key elements of such systems and highlight the potential use of these sensors for applications in disaster monitoring. We concentrate of three main developing application areas, coherence optimization in vegetated terrain for improved area monitoring of seismic activities via radar interferometry [4,5], early results on snow parameter monitoring for avalanche prediction [6] and 3-D vegetation mapping for bush fire management and control [7].
