This study was designed to investigate the effect of muscle exercise on various occlusal parameters such as occlusal contact area and occlusal contact pressure. The study subjects were 29 healthy adult volunteers, who were divided into the exercise group (n=24) and control group (n=5). Subjects in the exercise group performed isometric clenching at maximum voluntary contraction against a soft bite block for three seconds with five seconds rest over 15-min session, with at least two sessions per day over 8 weeks. Occlusal contact area and pressure were recorded using a dental prescale film and analyzed by Occluzer (FPD703, Fuji Film Co., Tokyo). Recording of occlusal parameters was repeated three times with 3-min interval, and repeated over five days in the control group and every week for 8 weeks in the exercise group. The total, anterior and posterior occlusal contact areas increased by 138.7, 219.8, and 129.6%, respectively following 8-week exercise. The average contact pressure did not increase after exercise. The anterior-posterior balance of the occlusal contact area increased significantly, but the mesio-lateral balance of occlusal contact area was stable after 8-week exercise. Our results indicate that isometric muscle exercise for 8 weeks increases occlusal contact area and advances forward the balance of occlusal contact area.
