Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is being used increasingly by dental practitioners to repair bony defects associated with teeth. This procedure involves application of a membrane to prevent invasion of the defect by gingival epithelium so that bone eventually can grow into and fill the defect. The effects on GBR of the duration of application of membrane have not been determined. In the present study, the artificial bone defects were formed on the mandibles of dogs and the polypropylene membranes, with the pore size 0.6μm, were applied. All dogs were sacrified 24 weeks after membrane application with the three different removal time of membrane, which were 8, 16 and 24 weeks after membrane application. The histological observation was done to determine which one is the best for bone formation. The results were as follows : 1. In the control groups, without applying the membranes, new bone tissue grew to form a hollow shape. 2. In the group in which the membranes were removed 8 weeks after application, new bone tissue grew discontinuously and also formed a hollow shape. For the reason of the invasion of soft connective tissue, the surface contour of cortical bone did not recover even in the proliferative stage of new bone formation. 3. In the group in which the membranes were removed 16 weeks after application, new bone tissue did not grow to form a hollow shape. The tendency of recovering the surface contour of cortical bone was also observed but it was incomplete in the proliferative stage of new bone formation. 4. In the group in which the membranes were retained for 24 weeks, the surface contour of cortical bone almost recovered. Bone formation keep active and new bone tissue showed on immature trabeculae even when the observing time was over. 5. It is clear that the replacement of periosteum was intercepted by GBR membrane and it effects the maturity of new bone. In 8 weeks-group I, 16 weeks-group I and 24 weeks-group, the new bone showed an immature form conversely, in the control group, the mature form. The maturity of bone depended upon the replacement time of periostum obviously.
