In the present study, we investigated the clinical effects of chemotherapy through intra-arterial infusion for 107 cases with oral squamous cell carcinoma. The effect of treatment and associated complications were as follows : 1. Complete response (CR) was achieved in 14 and partial response (PR) in 69 of the 107 cases. The overall clinical response rate was 77.6%. 2. The clinical response in upper gum carcinoma was significantly higher than in the other sites. But the clinical effects for regional lymph node metastasis were not satisfactory. 3. In five-year-survival rate, there was no significant correlation between the intra-arterial infusion groups and non intra-arterial infusion groups. But the secondary metastasis rate of cervical lymph node was significantly lower in intra-arterial infusion groups than in non intra-arterial infusion groups. 4. The principal adverse reaction was gastrointestinal disturbances, but symptoms were able to be controlled. Signs of hematologic toxicity and renal disturbances were mild and did not preclude the continuance of therapy. The results of this study indicated that intra-arterial chemotherapy had a beneficial effect on the local control of upper gum carcinoma and the supression of secondary lymph node metastasis.
