The role played by peak bone mass is indeed important for bone at the growth stage from the early human childhood to puberty in the growth stage. The author used rats corresponding to human early childhood (5-week-old) and puberty (8-week-old). These rats were given calcium-deficient diet and low calcium diet separately for three weeks under the same conditions. After bone debility was induced in them, their diets were changed to a balanced diet containing calcium, and maitained for three weeks. The internal structure of cortex of tibia diaphysis was then investigated. The results were as follows : I. Radiological bone density No significant difference was found in cortex of diaphysis, or medial cortex and interosseous cortex of the 5-week-old and 8-week-old between the control groups, and calcium-deficient diet groups. Between the calcium-deficient diet groups of the 5-week-old, significant difference was found between medial cortex and interosseous cortex and the latter showed higher values (p<0.05). Between the low calcium deficiency diet groups of the 8-week-old, significant difference was found between medial cortex and interosseous cortex and the latter showed higher values (p<0.01). II. Analysis of Ca and P on the X-ray microanalyzer In characteristic X-ray images by plane analysis of Ca and P in the same trabecula of medial cortex and interosseous cortex, Ca showed higher density than P in the control group, calcium-deficient diet group, and low calcium diet group for both the 5-week-old and 8-week-old. III. Histopathologic findings In the calcium-deficient diet group as compared with the control group for both the 5-week-old and 8-week-old, inner and outer circumferential lamellae decreased extensively and small marrow interposed in the bone matrix formation sites, and low calcification layers were found scattered adjacent to the marrow cavity. For the 8-week-old especially, in the calcium-deficient diet group, inner and outer circumferential lamellae that form the bone circumference were formed thick. Haversian lamellae that form the bone circumference were formed thick. Haversian system was found increased, and Haversian lamellae and osteocytic lacunae were rich in distribution. Furthermore bone remodelling was active and the same recovery findings were seen by storing sufficient calcium in the 5-week-old and 8-week-old, bone debility induced by low calcium deficiency diet will clearly show recovery of bone remodelling if a well balanced diet containing calcium is administered soon and continuously. For this purpose, it was suggested that such hormone of bone metabolism as parathyroid hormone, 1, 25(OH)_2D_3, and calcitonin are of great assistance.
