It is reported that palatine tonsil effectively incorporated exogenous foreign substances instilled at the surface of palatine tonsil. Other reports showed that tonsillar instillation of sheep red blood cells (SRBC) was an effective method to induce specific IgA in saliva. Cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) was shown to enhance immune response in some mucosal immunity. In this study, SRBC suspension together with CTB was instilled at the palatine tonsil and injected into muscle. In the 6 th week after the instillation, anti-SRBC agglutination antibody titer was increased about 30% compared with that of SRBC alone. Specific IgA concentration in saliva and specific IgA-producing cells in the several lymphoid tissues were also increased about 30%, respectively. In intramuscular injection group, CTB together with SRBC suspension did not affect those values of SRBC alone. The results suggest an enhancement by CTB in the immune response is specific in mucosal immunity including that causing by tonsillar instillation.
