Acupuncture has been widely used in Asia for thousands of years to treat stroke. In Korea, acupuncture is practiced on stroke patients in many rural clinics and urban hospitals as an alternative to western biomedicine. We have seen the combination therapy with acupuncture and biomedicine yields desirable results. However, there are some negative results of the therapy are also reported. We believe that such results are mainly due to practitioners' inappropriate methods. For example, the low frequency of acupuncture application may result in the negative results. In fact, there is no evidence that well trained acupuncturists were involved in the operations ending in poor results. In Korean oriental medical hospitals, well trained and licensed oriental medical doctors applied individual acupuncture therapy to stroke patients according to neurologic symptoms with higher frequency of, at least, more than once per 2 days. Many published clinical reports on Korean traditional medicine suggest that acupuncture has beneficial effect on stroke rehabilitation. In addition, those are in accordance with our clinical experience. How acupuncture works stroke rehabilitation is not fully understood yet. However, acupuncture therapy seems to promote brain plasticity, increases regional cerebral blood flow, and activates brain function and bioactivity. In our studies, we reported acupuncture therapy had significant therapeutic effects on various complications derived from stroke. Specifically, it relaxed post-stroke spasticity possibly by reducing spinal motor neuron excitability and helped cure insomia by modulating autonomic nervous system. It also showed therapeutic effect on edematous hand in hemiplegic arm. In conclusion, acupuncture therapy may be useful for functional recovery after stroke and various complications derived from stroke.
