Two new types of electrophilic aromatic substitutions, the intracomplex and the charge-transfer mechanisms were examined in Gattermann-Koch formylation and nitronium ion nitration, respectively. The results of kinetic, regioselectivity, and theoretical studies indicated that both intracomplex mechanism in Gattermann-Koch formylation and charge-transfer mechanism in nitronium ion nitration are likely processes depending on reaction conditions with specific regioselectivity.
