Within-plant Distribution of the Eggs and Larvae of Two Congeneric Chrysomelid Beetles on the Same Host Plant(Behavior and Ecology)

This study surveyed the within-plant distribution of egg masses and larvae, as well as the larval dispersal processes of two chrysomelid beetles, Pyrrhalta esakii Kimoto and P. humeralis (Chen). These two species are syntopic, have similar life histories, and feed on the same host plant (Viburnum erosum Thunberg) in Kyoto, Japan. Pyrrhalta esakii lays small single egg masses on branch tips. The larvae are solitary and feed on buds or leaves. Pyrrhalta humeralis, on the other hand, lays large egg masses at the base of branches, often in groups. The hatched larvae move toward the buds on the tips of the branches, and often feed on the same leaves. Differences in the larval traits of P. esakii and P. humeralis are discussed in terms of the interactions with their host plants.
