The purpose of this study was to clarify roles of occlusal facets in mastication. Ten adult male volunteers (mean age: 25.7±9.7years) participated in this study. Jaw movement during masticating chew. ing-gum was measured with the 6-degree-of-freedom jaw-tracking device (MM-JI). The relationship between occlusal facet and chewing movement was analyzed by combining the kinetic data and 3-dimensionally measured morphologic data of each subject. The results were as follows:<BR>1. During the grinding phase of mastication, the A and C occlusal facets of the upper and lower jaw molars became close to each other and formed the so-called squeezing room first. Then, the B occlusal facets of both jaws became close to each other as the volume of squeezing room was reduced (The A, B, and C occlusal facets correspond to the A, B, and C contacts of tripodization proposed by Thomas PK).<BR>2. Vector analysis revealed that jaw movement in the grinding phase of mastication was guided by the A or C occlusal facets and that the angle of jaw movement vector to the B occlusal facet of the opposite jaw was approximately 30°.<BR>The results suggested that the newly-developed analyzing method was effective for evaluating the occlusal condition during function.
