In the early 90s, Alfa Laval stated new development with aim of designing a complete new range of separation equipment specifically for the Marine & Power industries, This was in response to extensive specifically for the Marine & Power industries. This was in response to extensive surveys that showed that the market expected increases in the performance and reliability of separation systems, A further request, expressed by both engine builders and operators was for more information regarding the efficiency of separation systems with respect to the removal of harmful components especially from heavy fuel oils.<BR>This last request created problems since, at that time, no method existed to determine separation efficiency i absolute terms. Alfa Lavel decided that a key success factor in development of its new range of separators was also to develop a method to test the efficiency of the separators performance. Furthermore, development should not be limited to the separator itself. The equipment or components around the separator, the controls, valves and piping should also developed to ensure the cleaning system can really influence the separation efficiency as a complete integrated treatment unit.<BR>The decision not to rise separator capacities until accurate efficiency measurement was possible has resulted in an innovative design of a new concept in oil treatment.<BR>We hope that the test methods developed will continue to help drive the industry towards greater separating efficiencies, which will only benefit the engine builder and the operator.
