Assisted Hydrothermal Oxidation (AHO) is a disposal process through which halogenated and other wastes are fully destroyed under conditions avoiding the production of acid gases and the accumulation of product salts on reactor walls. A sodium carbonate bed is employed in water just above its critical temperature (374°C), with the addition of oxygen or other oxidants. The bed, rather than the reactor walls, is the site for salt deposition. Thorough destruction of a range of wastes is provided under conditions which accelerate oxidation rates up to 3 orders of magnitude above those for supercritical water oxidation at comparable temperatures.
