A laser induced photoacoustic spectroscopy (LIPAS) system has been studied to analyze penta-valent(NpO+2) neptunium under PUREX process condition. The detection limit absorptivity of Np(V) in nitric acid is found to be 3.41×10-5cm-1 which is two orders lower than that of conventional absorption spectrophotometry. The intensity of the photoacoustic signal is magnified in proportion to the coexisting uranium concentration. Signals of Np(V) ions in the presence of uranium agree well with signals of Np(V) without uranium when multiplying by the specific heat of the solutions containing uranium. The photoacoustic spectra are measured by a double-cell system.
