A variably-humidified air flow supplying system has been constructed for the study of combustion phenomena which are strongly affected by the concentration of water vapor contained in an oxidizer. In this system, the water-vapor concentration can be controlled in the range of 0.001∿0.1 in mole fraction at a total pressure of atmospheric; the maximum mass flow-rate of the air (excluding the water-vapor mass contained in it) is 0.17kg/s. The air is first excessively humidified and then dehumidified so that its humidity becomes a desired value. Humidifying is made by contact of the air with the liquid water surface. Dehumidifying is achieved principally by the contact cooling method (the method in which a humid gas is dried by direct contact with a solid surface whose temperature is lower than the dew point of the gas) and supplementarily by the expansion method (the method in which a humid gas is dried by decrease of its total pressure). Design principles, detailed specifications of the apparatus, and the results of the performance tests are described.
