In order to investigate the seismic behavior of existing reinforced concrete (R/C) rectangular columns which arestrengthened by circular steel jackets, four specimens without clearance between the upper- and lower-stubs, and the top- andbottom-ends of the steel plate-jackets were designed, and were tested under three different constant axial-load of 5.6, 13.2 and 19.4MPa, and alternately repeated lateral forces. Test results of the retrofitted columns with circular steel jackets without the clearance arecompared with those obtained from the column with circular steel jackets with the clearance. The results indicate that the lateral loadcarrying capacities of the retrofitted specimen without the clearance are 1.5 to 1.8 times higher than the corresponding retrofittedspecimen with the clearance.
