This research represents a year-long longitudinal study into the affects of communication strategy instruction on speaking proficiency. The paper replicates research carried out by Nakatani (2005) and aims to equip Japanese EFL learners with the linguistic and problem-solving skills toovercome linguistic barriers. The findings indicate clearly that influence of prominent socio-cultural factors have to be considered in order to maximize the full effectiveness of strategy use.
