我が国の英語教育において、英語発音辞典で伝統的に馴染みのあるものは、主に、Longman Pronunciation Dictionary(Wells)[以下、LPD]とCambridge Pronouncing Dictionary(Jones, edited by Roach, Hartman, and Setter)[以下、EPD]の2冊であろう。特に、LPDには、複数の発音形がある語については、その好みを示す`Preference Poll'が付いており、発音変種の好まれる割合(%)が示されている。これは、英語を教える者にとって大変に役に立つ情報である。本論では、LPDの`Preference Poll'にある発音変種の割合の数値がどのようにして得られたものか、また、その妥当性について検証する。
