New Chinese immigrants are the largest ethnic group of new comers who have come to Japan after 1980's. Unlike their predecessors who arrived in the first half of 20th century, new immigrants have come from a country where growing economic opportunities are reserved for those who have advanced degrees from the very best universities. They show very modes of to incorporation into Japanese society, while willing to maintain their own connections to their motherland at the same time. With the goal of preparing to return to China, keeping their kids to learn Chinese language, culture, customs and heritage have been the strongest educational need of new Chinese immigrants in Japan. In this article I illustrate 1)New Chinese immigrants in Japan: their socioeconomic backgrounds, routs of coming to Japan, family status and educational needs. 2) Chinese language education programs including formal Chinese language Schools, weekend Chinese language Schools, correspondence courses conducted by the ethnic media. 3) valuation of Chinese education for their kids based on questionnaire to 171 people of Chinese citizens in Japan. Drowning on past studies and my own research,I focus on how Chinese language schools evolved a much broader range of functions beyond the preservation of ethnic language and culture.
