The purposes of this study are to pursue a practice of forest road from the point of view of management and to protect a nature environment destruction. And the soil test purposes to grasp the essential properties of soils for an approximate method. As the basic reserch for the study of embankment practice of forest road, we tried to explain the engneering properties of embankment soil and to make clear the relation among the settlement of surface, the cone index and the trafficability. The results are as follows. (1) On the experiment zone, the bed-rock is the Takato granite which is divided to the granite of Riyoke Zone.(2) The upper soils are composed of the freshly weathered coarese-grained soil (grayish brown color), the weathered fine-grained soil (brown color) and the organic soil. The embankment soils of 15 samples are mixed those soils. (3) The samples (No. 1, 2, 3, 4) with more fine soil are unstable to soil property, but the samples (No. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) with more coarese soil have enough bearing capasity for base. (4) The relation is observed between the settlement of surfase (Δh_N) and the number of passes of a caterpiller tractor (N) as follows. Δh_N=N/a+bN…(1) Δh_N/Δh_∞=N/a/b+N…(2) where Δh_∞ is the final settlement and a and b are coefficients whose values are obtained by a least squares method. The degree of compaction of each soil is showed by the equation (2). (5) In the relation between the cone index (q_c) and the number of passes of a caterpiller tractor(N), the samples (No. 1, 2, 3, 4) are effected by remolding when N increaes, but q_c decreased. (6) The relation is observed between the dry density (r_d) and the cone index (q_c) as follows. the samples of fine soil:r_d=0.094q_c+0.468 the samples of coarse soil: r_d=0.039 q_c+1.055 (7) The settlement of surface (Δh) is related to the cone index (q_c) as follows. the samples of fine soil: q_c=0.107 Δh+4.095 the samples of coarse soil: q_c=0.488 Δh+3.606
