The hollow glass microsphere can be produced from the "Shirasu", which is acidicvolcanic ejecta and widely in southern Kyushu. This hollow glass microsphere is calledas "Silas Balloon". We investigated the conditions for production of Silas Balloon andproducibility of it from some Shirasu produced in three districts, Furue, Iwagawa andShibushi of Kagoshima Prefectrue.Moreover, a study was made of the electroless nickel plating on Silas Ballon and glasssheet. Influence of pH, temperature and concentration of reducing reagent on the rate ofplating was examined in acidic electroless nickel plating solutions.And following results have been obtained.1) It is optimum to calcine the Shirasu as material at a temperature about 1000°Cshortly within 60 seconds.2) Increasing temperature of plating, pH of plating solution, and concentration ofreducing reagent, the rate of plating has accelated.3) Optimum plating conditions of electroless nickel plating on Silas Balloon and glasssheet are as follow ; compositions of plating solution ; NiSO_4 30g/l, CH_3COONa 10g/l,NaH_2PO_2 10g/l, temperature of plating ; 75~80°C, pH of plating solution 4.5~5.0.
