Citric Acid Fermentation by Immobilized Aspergillus niger in Cellulose Carrier

Various types of carriers were screened to immobilizewith Aspergillus niger for citric acid production. Thescreening test showed that cellulose sponge was anexcellent immobilization carrier for citric acidfermentation wherein the yield of 45 g/1 was obtainedafter 7 days of cultivation, while the yield withurethane foam as a carrier was 5 g/l. Using the cellulosesponge carrier which was earlier tested, the method ofimmobilization in batch culture was investigated undervarying medium composition, medium concentration andcarrier packing rate. The highest productivity achievedwas 9.5 g/l-day at 55% packing rate when the basal mediumconcentration was increased two times. However, increasingthe basal medium concentration three times, the maximumproductivity was 7 g/l-day at 40% packing rate.Furthermore, at basal concentration and at 30% packingrate, the maximum production of 95 g/l was reached whenthe biomass density was 4 g/l. Results showed thatproduction rates were also inhibited by other limitingfactors such as oxygen supply or nutrient distribution.Introduction
