The fracture strength and toughness of too1 materia1s for meta1forming (JIS SK3,S KS3,S KD11 and SKH51) under the condition ofcombined stresses were eva1uated and investigated experimentally.The combined stresses considered in this study were caused by simultaneousaction of torsion and tension.From the re1ation between the absorbed energy and hardnessunder the condition of uniaxia1 tensile stress, three kinds of testpieces with the hardness which correspond to the regions of ductilefracture, brittle fracture and transition were used for the experiment.Those test pieces were prepared by varying heat treatment.The relations between the u1timate tensile strength (fracture)and the torsiona1 stress and the relations between the absorbed energy(toughness) and the torsiona1 stress were examined for threeregions,that is,the regions of ductile fracture,brittle fracture andtransition.The conc1usions are as follows :(1) In the region of ductile fracture, the ultimate tensile strengthand absorbed energy under the combined stresses are smaller thanthose under uniaxial stress.(2) In the regions of transition and britt1e fracture, the ultimatetensile strength is near1y constant even if the torsiona1 stress isloaded at the degree of shear yie1d stress.(3) The ultimate tensile strength in the region of transition is 1argerthan that in the other two regions.(4) The toughness in the region of ductile fracture is considerablygreater than that in the region of brittle fracture.(5) In the too1 materia1s used in the experiment. SKH51 possessesthe greatest fracture strength and toughness, so it is best too1 material.
